CYBER ATTACK ALERT: Urgent Notifications from Esultants Web Services

WannaCry: The Worst Ransomware on Record

So far, the WannaCry ransomware has affected over 237,000 computers worldwide. The WannaCry infection spreads quickly by scanning for other vulnerable computers on the same network or hosts on the Internet. Once the virus has been downloaded to an individual computer, it will take the files and data from that computer ransom.

Business networks are especially vulnerable to the WannaCry virus. How can you protect your company's information?

A WannaCry email may disguise itself as an invoice, job offer, or email from your boss.

The email will contain a .zip file containing the code to the virus.

How to Spot Phishing Emails

The WannaCry virus is harder to spot than other scam emails. It is considered a spear phishing attack, meaning it targets its victims, researches their habits and information, and disguises itself.
Consider these other warning signs before you open any files on your computer:
  • Spoofed "From" field. Make sure you recognize the email address in the "From" field. Check the name and spelling and ensure you know the sender.
  • Deceptive links. A scam email may hide a malicious URL by attaching it to a different link text. Hover over the link to see the actual URL destination.
  • Attachments. The WannaCry virus is packaged in a .zip file attachment. Other scams may come packaged in an attachment with dangerous code that will download to your computer when opened.

What to Do If You Clicked

Sometimes even our best prevention efforts fail, and we must turn to plan B. If you are a victim of the WannaCry ransomware attack, follow these steps to restore your files:
  • Don't pay the ransom. Paying the attackers will only encourage more scamming, and there is no guarantee you will receive all of your files back.
  • Restore your backed up files. A backup is the best way you will be able to retrieve your lost files.
  • Download a program to clean the virus from your computer. This will not be able to decrypt your files, but it will prevent the virus from spreading.

How to Prevent Attacks

The best way to keep your computer safe is prevention. Follow these tips to stop hacking before it's too late:
  • Make sure your email filtering and anti-malware software is up to date.
  • Do not make sensitive information and personal email addresses available publicly.
  • Train employees to spot dangerous emails.
  • Back up important files on a completely separate system so you can restore them if your information is taken for ransom. This is the best way to protect yourself from the WannaCry virus.
